Zaha Hadid Architects had won the international competition to design the new headquarters for Antwerp’s Port Authority.
The 12,800 sq m scheme includes the revamp of an existing former fire station which sits below a new 6,200 sq m ‘crystalline’ extension – a designed to reflect the Belgian’s ports link to the diamond industry.
Supported by three concrete pillars housing the stairs and lifts, the five-storey, glass and aluminium clad office will be home to offices, an auditorium and a ‘panoramic’ restaurant.
Describing the scheme, project architect Joris Pauwels said: ‘The new building’s volume is enclosed by articulated surfaces that have a façade of glass and aluminium panels, reflecting the surroundings during the day and transforming into a radiating crystal at night. The panels do not all lie in the same plane but are rotated slightly with respect to one another, reflecting light from these facets.’
